Total length Maximum 60 cm.
Description

Back reddish brown, with irregular black mottling scattered along the body.
Hatchlings have dark transverse bands on the body.
Ventrals light pink. Head with no markings, and is not distinct from neck.
Tail short and blunt. Scales smooth.
Is called Kukri Snake because its enlarged rear teeth resemble in shape the "kukri" knives.

Habitat

Damp or dry open areas. Particularly grassland shrubland, and the edge of woodland.
Occurs up to an altitude of 700 m. Sometimes seen inside catchwaters.

Behaviour Diurnal. A gentle snake. Will defecate when caught for self-defense and coil into a tight spiral loop.
Diet Feeds on spiders and insects such as crickets.
Reproduction Oviparous. Lays 3-5 eggs.
Distribution Uncommon in Hong Kong. Present in the New Territories, Lantau Island and Hong Kong Island. Not recorded from small islands.
Occurs in southern China including Hainan.
