Total length Up to 65 cm.
Description Back dark chocolate-brown.
Two dull orange dorsolateral stripes extend from the neck to the tail tip.
Ventrals whitish, with large black spot at each end.
Head black.
Distinctive white stripes extend from behind of each eye to the neck, connected to the orange dorsal stripes.
Upper and Lower labials cream-coloured.
Scales lightly keeled.
Habitat

Live in damp leaf litter in mountain forest, ususally near stream.
In Hong Kong, known from only 4 specimens taken between 150 - 500m altitudes.
In China, specimens were reported to be collected from 600 - 900m altitude.

Behaviour Little is known about its behaviours.
Probably active both at night and day.
Diet A captive specimen from Guangdong fed on amphibians.
Reproduction Oviparous. Lay at least 3 eggs, as one specimen in China had 3 eggs in the body.
Distribution

In Hong Kong, first recorded in 1986 from Shek Kong.

1991 - Shek Kong.
1995 - North slope of Kwun Yam Shan inside Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden.
1997 - Access Road to Kadoorie Institute (Shek Kong Centre)
Occurs in central and southern China including Hainan Island.
