“Professor Matthew Evans is the Acting Director of the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Hong Kong (HKU).”

Welcome to the School of Biological Sciences University of Hong Kong.

Biological sciences is the study of life itself. In the School we cover the full range of the subject from the sub-cellular to the ecosystem. We have particular expertise in marine, freshwater and terrestrial ecology. Hong Kong is an amazing place for ecology with its location on the edge of the largest landmass in the world and almost exactly on the Tropic of Cancer. In cell and molecular biology we specialise in the study of two areas: photosynthesis, which is obviously the primary source of energy for all life on earth; and bioactive peptides, which are important in homeostasis and cell signalling. We seek to be one of the leading schools of biological science in the region.

Matthew is an ecologist with interests in understanding the impacts of climate change on the natural world. He is also Dean of the Faculty of Science. He was awarded his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 1991, and worked several universities in the UK before coming to Hong Kong in 2016.
