“Professor Kenneth Leung is the Director of the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Hong Kong (HKU).”
Kenneth Leung is a Professor in Aquatic Ecology and Toxicology at HKU, a Fellow of the Society of Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology and a Justice of the Peace in Hong Kong.
He received the James Henry Scott PhD Scholarship from John Swire & Sons (H.K.) Ltd to read and obtain his PhD in marine ecotoxicology from University of Glasgow in 2000. As a Croucher Postdoctoral Research Fellow, he received postdoctoral training in environmental risk assessment of chemical contaminants at University of London during 2000-2001. He joined HKU as a Research Assistant Professor in January 2002, and was promoted to Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and full Professor in 2003, 2009 and 2013, respectively. At HKU, he is also a member of the Swire Institute of Marine Science, and served as Associate Dean (Research) at Faculty of Science during 2014-2017 and Warden of Morrison Hall during 2011-2017. In summer of 2017, he went to Harvard University and successfully accomplished a professional certificate training programme on management and leadership in higher education at Harvard Graduate School of Education.
So far, he has published over 180 peer-reviewed articles which are principally related to aquatic ecology, pollution, ecotoxicology and environmental risk assessment in both marine and freshwater ecosystems as well as eco-shoreline engineering. He is among the Top 1% Cited Scientists in Ecology/Environmental Sciences in the world, according to Clarivate Analytics’ Essential Science Indicators. He has supervised more than 28 research postgraduate students (8 MPhil and 20 PhD) at HKU. He is a founding Editor-in-Chief of the SCI journal, Regional Studies in Marine Science (Elsevier) and a Subject Editor for Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management (Wiley) and Environmental Science and Pollution Research (Springer). Internationally, he is a member of the Steering Committee for the World Harbour Project and regularly serves as a grant reviewer for Australia, France, Singapore, South Africa and the United States.
He is currently serving as an expert member in various advisory committees for the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), such as the Advisory Council on the Environment; Advisory Council on Food and Environmental Hygiene; Country and Marine Parks Board; Board of Directors of Ocean Park Corporation; Town Planning Appeal Board Panel, and Red Tide/HAB Expert Advisory Group. He is also the Chairman of the Marine Parks Committee, Fisheries Enhancement Fund Management Committee, and Marine Mammal Conservation Working Group as well as Trustee of Ocean Park Conservation Foundation Hong Kong. Owing to his professional achievements and dedicated community services, he was selected as one of the “Ten Outstanding Young Persons” for Hong Kong by Junior Chamber International in 2010. In 2017, Professor Kenneth Leung was awarded the 19th Biwako Prize for Ecology by the Ecological Society of Japan in recognition of his contributions to aquatic ecology and toxicology in Asia, and conferred as an SETAC Fellow. In 2018, he was appointed as a Justice of the Peace by the HKSAR Government.
