Research Postgraduate Programme


For Postgraduate Research at the School of Biological Science we offer a stimulating and supportive environment for research and research training. In postgraduate research programmes, students undertake supervised research leading to the production of a thesis over a prescribed period of time. Higher degrees available by research are:
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD; 3 or 4 years)
Master of Philosophy (M.Phil, 2 years)




Postgraduates of the biological sciences find work in departments of government, food industries, hospitals, institutes, education, consultancies, non-governmental organizations, private sector and doing research in universities both locally and overseas.

Master of Science in Food Industry: Management and Marketing

This is a part-time programme introduced in 1998. The objective is to offer advanced training in management skills and marketing research methodology for food professionals to enhance the competitiveness of local food manufacturers in a changing market. The programme focuses on the interface between human nutrition and food science, safety management in processing, packaging, storage and distribution of food products, waste management and control, as well as market research, financial planning, product development and evaluation and compliance with food laws and regulations - an area of increasing concern to consumers, government and the food industry.

This MSc Programme is for those wishing to develop a career in food-related research in the food industry.

Master of Science in Environmental Management

The MSc (EnvMan) degree Programme was introduced in September 1989 for part-time study towards a 2 years degree. The overall objective of the Programme is to respond to Hong Kong's need for more trained personnel in the field of environmental management. The curriculum is multi-disciplinary in character and draws upon inputs from a broad range of subject areas, including the natural sciences, engineering, urban planning and law. Written coursework and a dissertation provide opportunities for specialized work on specific topics.

The Programme seeks to provide students with a comprehensive perspective on environmental protection and management issues and to equip them to participate effectively in the resolution of such issues in both the public and private sectors. This Programme is taught jointly by the Kadoorie Institute, the Division of Ecology & Biodiversity, Departments of Law, Earth Sciences, Civil Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, and local practitioners.

Master of Science in Food Safety and Toxicology

Established by the School of Biological Sciences in 2009, the MSc in Food Safety and Toxicology programme aims to provide a comprehensive training on a multi-disciplinary field involving general toxicology, food toxicology, regulatory toxicology, and food safety management. The distinctive feature of this toxicology programme is its focus on food safety perspectives. It emphasizes on basic knowledge as well as practical skills in recognition and evaluation of human exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals and pathogens, in our living environment and via dietary intake of foods. Special reference will be made to food safety evaluation and regulation.

Students are expected to have basic knowledge in physiology, biochemistry, chemistry or molecular biology for understanding the topics covered in the programme. The programme is intended for those with relevant experience in the food, chemical, pharmaceutical and public health sectors.
