Dr. Janet Chan is a Lecturer and Programme Coordinator at the School of Biological Sciences, The University of Hong Kong (HKU). Dr. Chan obtained her PhD in environmental health and toxicology at the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) in 2008.  Her study focused on human health risk assessment associated with primitive electronic waste recycling in China.  So far, eleven peer-reviewed articles have been published on this subject. She was awarded Outstanding Postgraduate Scholarship (2007-2008) from the Hong Kong Association of University Women, and Dr. Wu Yee Sun Memorial Scholarship Fund (2007-2008) during her PhD study.  Dr. Chan also holds a master’s degree with distinction in Environmental and Public Health Management from HKBU and a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Life Sciences from HKU.

Before re-joining HKU, Dr. Chan was working at the World Alliance of YMCAs, the headquarters of YMCA based in Geneva, Switzerland. She was the focal point on environmental and climate change issues for the organization. Working closely with the top management, she launched a programme for the youth worldwide to participate in the The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen (COP15), Denmark. Apart from environmental issues, she also took part in advocacy work in gender equality and youth human rights.

Currently, Dr. Chan is teaching Master of Science in Environmental Management, HKU and supervises students for their dissertation research projects. She also delivers guest lectures in undergraduate courses in HKU.
