Professor Gray Williams (Professor, School of Biological Sciences)
B.Sc. (Hons.) Manc., Ph.D. Bristol.

Fields of interest
Rocky shore ecology with particular emphasis on algal-herbivore interactions

Prof. Gray A. Williams joined The University of Hong Kong in 1989 after a brief Post-doctoral Fellowship at Port Erin Marine Laboratory, the University of Liverpool, Isle of Man. Since then he has established a research group working on the community ecology of tropical rocky shores.

Teaching duties involve a number of environmental science classes at both BSc and MSc levels. In particular, he coordinates the undergraduate courses: Coastal Ecology and Final Year Project; and the MSc course: An Introduction to Ecology, he also coordinates the First Year Residential Field Course.  Within the Division, Prof. Williams is the Postgraduate Tutor.

Research interests focus on rocky shore ecology with particular emphasis on algal-herbivore interactions. Currently Prof. Williams heads a research group of over ten people, working on a variety of intertidal organisms, but maintaining a focus on algal (especially cyanobacteria) - herbivore interactions and the role of herbivore behaviour influencing rocky shore community structure.
