Freshwater Macroinvertebrates in Hong Kong

Isonychia kiangsiensis

General appearance
Body color yellowish brown to dark brown with a distinct pale median stripe from head to abdomen
Body spindle shaped, size large up to 18mm long (excluding antennae & cerci)

Head
Head vertex with a pale coronal stripe
Antennae pale yellow but scapes & pedicles brown

Thorax
Distinct longitudinal pale stripe across thorax; pronotum with two pale submedian cresentric markings
* Double rows of conspicious long setae on inner side of femora & tibiae of forelegs; forecoxae with tuft of filamentous gills; foretibiae with long apical spur; dark brown bands on all legs

Abdomen
Abdominal gills I-VII, dorsal lamellae similar in shape, gill tufts distinct
Large diffuse dark mark with small pale patch proximally & & small brown spot distally on gills
Cerci 3-filamentous; its length about half of body length; covered by dense fringes with dark bands submedially & distally

Distribution:
In Hong Kong, specimens are recorded from Pak Tam Chung, Tsak Yue Wu, Ho Chung, Ko Tong Ha Yeung & Tsak Yue Wu (Sai Kung), Tai Shui Hang (Ma On Shan), Wu Kau Tang and Tai Lam Chung.

Habitat: Larvae are found in clean, unpolluted fast-flowing riffles associated with dense leaf litter.
