Freshwater Macroinvertebrates in Hong Kong

Procloeon venustum

General appearance
Body length (ex. antennae & cerci) could reach to 9mm -- regarded as large species among baetids.
Cerci short slightly longer than half of abdominal length; dark marking medially with a feathery distal end (shown in mature larva)

Posterior marginal spines and lateral spines present on abdominal segments
Gills I-VI double - ventral gills asymmetrical & bluntly pointed with dorsal flap; Gill VII single
Gills well-tracheated and dorsal gills could not be clearly shown in early stages (see below images)
Distinctive dark band on tergum IX & posterior half of tergum VIII and triangular markings on terga II - VIII

Distribution:
In Hong Kong, specimens are recorded from Sam A Shui Tsuen and Shek Mun Lap (Lantau Island), Bride's Pool and Wang Shan Keuk (Pat Sin Leng), Tai Po Kau Forest Stream, Ho Chung (Sai Kung).

Habitat: Larvae live in moderate water current streams.
