Description

Size 8 - 13 cm
Description
  • A very large frog (the second largest frog in Hong Kong)
  • Back olive-brown with scattered black spots and elongated wrinkles
  • Snout is long
  • Eyes are large
  • Belly white
  • Toes fully webbed


Habitat and Ecology

Habitat Cultivated fields, ponds and slow-moving streams.
Activity Nocturnal
Diet Frogs, small rodents and insects.


Reproduction

Breeding period May to June
Larvae Very large; dark grey.
Egg Eggs form a cluster floating on water.

 

Distribution and Conservation

Distribution

Declining population due to loss of habitat and hunting pressure for food. Distributed in New Territories (e.g. Wu Kau Tang, Ho Chung) and Lantau Island (e.g. Pui O and Mui Wo).

Widespread in central and southern China , and Thailand .

Conservation status (IUCN)

Least Concern
